Does driving for Uber, Lyft & others affect my insurance? Y E S !!
Short and sweet, here's how it works....
Rideshare or Transportation Network coverage is for people who use their own personal vehicle to drive for transportation network companies (TNC) such as Uber and Lyft, Grubhub, etc....
YOU MUST add the RIDESHARE OR TRANSPORTATION NETWORK COVERAGE (TNC) endorsement to your auto insurance to be covered!!!
This added endorsement provides the necessary coverage during the specific period of time when the driver has logged into the TNC’s application and is looking for a passenger, but has not yet accepted a request for transportation and no passenger or food for delivery is occupying the vehicle. During this time, the driver is NOT covered by their personal auto insurance policy (unless the endorsement is added), and only minimally — if at all — by the TNC’s policy. This is known as the GAP in coverage when operating for Uber, Lyft, Grubhub etc...
Here is a samle that Safeco Insurance provides to their customers:
With this sample of Safeco's endorsement, all coverages, optional coverages and coverage levels the customer purchased for the personal-use auto policy will extend during this period of time. For example, if the insured’s auto policy includes liability, comprehensive, collision and UM/UIM, those coverages will be available.
The endorsement applies only to the vehicle identified for ridesharing and does not provide coverage for other vehicles on the auto insurance policy.
DON'T GO WITHOUT adding the endorsement to your personal auto insurance if you driver for any delivery company.
